He continues to stand—loom, really—over her as she sits down on the cold ground. After a moment, John feels this is an incredibly threatening and aggressive thing for him to do, loom, so he sits down next to her.
An excruciating four seconds of silence pass. John struggles to think of something to say, grimly certain that he's missed the boat of saying 'yes' to her thank you, or something more clever. Finally, he settles on, "It's a wonderful night to be sitting on the ground."
