the gist

it's court's birthday!! arlo arranged a surprise party in the kitchen of prescott's fire house and invited whoever he thinks her friends are.

celebrate, eat, drink, and if you can't get home safely at the end of the night he'll roll you into a bed in the bunkhouse.

while only some characters were officially invited, feel free to write anyone in! just say they were at prescott on business idc.

the details

zelda deemed the theme to be ~~unhinged~~ cow print and raided the danforth walmart for decorations, including cow print diningware and inflatable horses.
arlo made egg-free veggie burgers and chocolae mousse.
everyone else brought whatever they brought; i'm not listing them, you do it.

Reggie's eyes flash like a vampire in a shitty 90s movie smelling blood.

"Nah. Bug's. From our most recent excitement." She casually scrolls to the next picture (a piece of a fence post stabbed through Amy McBride's hand) and smirks. "I didn't get so much as a bruise out there."

Reggie plucks the sidekick from Carter's hands. "Now you."

"Poor Bug. I only got this." Carter is equipped to brag right back, turning her cheek to show off the almost-healed and very fetching scar that now lines it. She does get out her own sidekick. She runs how incriminating this might be. She hadn't taken any pictures of the stolen firetruck. She's not an idiot. Instead, it's a very blurry picture of Potato looking morose in a very cute pink cowboy hat. "New clothes, from Danforth. She hates them." mourns Carter.

Reggie doesn't let her eyes obviously linger on Carter's scar, but she can take a second to appreciate it. She's showing it off, after all, it would be rude not to look.

"Too bad, pink's her color," Reggie offers, moving her eyes to the phone, and leans back in her seat. "I was hoping it'd be something I could arrest you for."

That shouldn't be intriguing, along with the obvious insult. Carter probably shouldn't feel like she's being dared into something. And definitely she shouldn't lean forward, elbows on the table, but she does. "Incriminating evidence. In a digital document. Like I'd make it that easy."

Reggie runs a tongue along her teeth, that shitty grin teasing her features. "Guess I'll have to work a little harder, then."

She reaches out to flip another Jenga piece.

Dare: Kiss another player.

Carter raises an eyebrow, and does not claim the jenga block. "Manipulating the system. Such a cop trick." She accuses.

"Did you hear that? Sounds like the bad sport alarm. That thing is just going wild today." Still, Reggie sets the piece aside and reaches for another, making a big show of selecting one where she can't see either end displaying the category.

Truth: What's your biggest turn-off?

"Cops." Carter says, immediately, deadpan, even as her very own shitty smirk cuts right through her cheek scar. Lest she trip the bad sport alarm again, she corrects, "Also. Any guy who thinks he's smarter than me."

"Lucky us, there's neither of those here." Reggie tilts her head, resting her cheek on her knuckles. "I personally took care of every man who thinks he knows shit."

Carter unconsciously mirrors this pose, still leaning back in her chair. “Really.” She says, with all the valid cynicism of someone who had met a man, “And how did you do that?”

"Men are easy. Tell him his plan is bad and he'll run himself right off a cliff to prove you wrong." Reggie props her feet up on an empty chair across the table. "Now a woman with a bad plan? She just ropes everyone else in to make it that cliff a group effort."

“Til you’re part of the cliff yourself. And aren’t quite sure how.” Carter smiles like this is either a threat or a fond memory, and then wiggles the same block at Reggie. This should be good.

"Cops." She grins. Yeah, guess who's been cleaning up after cops for pretty much her entire professional adult life. "And people who can't fucking take care of themselves. I don't need extra work."

“Lucky again. Neither of those, here.” Springs forth from her mouth without anything close to her permission. Carter busies her hands with tidying the blocks, helping despite herself. She does have to press the point, quiet and teasing, “So then. You’d be just arresting me for spite. No cop justice delusions.”

Reggie leans in, propping her arms on the table. "Can't a girl just have a hobby?"

"My mistake. Arrest whoever you can catch." She makes a point to put her hands on the edge of the table, but stays back in her chair.

That dangerous smile is still on Reggie's face, the tip of her tongue poking out between her teeth. She drops her feet to the floor and leans in closer, walking her fingers across the table as she eyes Carter's hands, posture, the scar on her cheek, and lowers her voice.

"It really is a lot of fun." She narrows her eyes, then grabs her Slurpee cup of coffee off the table. "But, ooh, damn, I've got a lot of work to do right now."

Carter doesn't change a single thing, standing (sitting) her ground even approached by that voice, and that smile. She's never backed down from a dangerous situation in her life. She bites her lip, the only indication she's maybe aware of Reggie's presence at all. Her own voice stays light, amused.

"Hobbies for later. I understand."

Reggie stands up straight, slotting the last Jenga piece into the box.

Second-to-last. She drops the unclaimed dare piece in front of Carter. Kiss another player.

"I'm around if you wanna play again."

She winks obnoxiously and walks away.

When she hears the footsteps leave, Carter exhales and her expression gets dazed and terrified as she stares at the wall, still in the same position like she's scared if she moves everyone will turn and laugh. Or clap. But no one does. After a moment, she considers putting the jenga piece back. She really does. But she pockets it instead. A crime, for later.
